Unlike cinematography, photography works with still images. Telling a story through a still image can be challenging. But conceptual photography allows photographers to use everything at their disposal to illustrate a story within a single image.

In this series of photographs by Marja Pirilä titled “Inside/Outside”, “Dreams in the Camera Obscura” (Dark Room), the rooms are converted into a 'camera obscura'. This has allowed her to capture the inside and outside of a room at the same time.

Pirilä has brilliantly used this effect to conceptualize a child dreaming. The result is a photo that holds a profound storytelling power.

As you can see, conceptual photography is a creative way to illustrate an inner state of a human being. Beyond dreams, conceptual photographers find this method effective for portraying the complex emotions of the human experience.
