"I wanted to create an image that people had never seen Sam in."
The designer who created Sam Smith's much-talked-about BRIT Awards outfit has explained what the look was all about.
On Saturday night, Smith caught the eye of many with her choice of outfit on the red carpet at the 2023 BRIT Awards.
The singer wore a black latex balloon-like outfit, which featured puffy sleeves and legs and a zipper that clung to the front of the all-in-one look.
Smith wore a pair of heeled boots and small earrings.
The outfit was designed by Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai.
Smith has received a lot of attention in recent weeks following the release of 'Unholy' and in particular for the 'I'm not here to make friends' music video, which some have criticized for being overly sexual.
It seems that all the talk about the singer's body and identity – which has often crossed the line of abuse – was the inspiration for Pillai to create the bold outfit.
Speaking to Women's Wear Daily after the awards, Pillai said: “Sam had a lot of hate comments recently after 'Unholy' about body image. This is my take on celebrating his natural form and the beauty of being himself.
"I wanted to create an image that people had never seen Sam in."
He added: "I would never sell those rubber pants, but yeah, people love it."
While some mocked Smith for the outfit, others praised the singer for his confidence.
