A University of Florida and Harvard study has raised many questions and caused much controversy over the role of coffee in sleep.

Until now it was believed that drinking coffee in the evening caused sleep problems, but this new study published earlier in August says the opposite.

785 people participated in the study. They were supervised for a full 5164 days and nights.

The researchers recorded the use of coffee, alcohol and nicotine.

Study participants were provided with an electronic device that was placed on the wrist, thanks to which, researchers could have a clearer picture of the quality and duration of sleep.

No connection between coffee and sleep parameters

Study data showed that nicotine and alcohol have a very negative impact on sleep. Just smoke a cigarette before bed and it will take you a full 42 minutes to be able to sleep. Caffeine on the other hand did not produce any side effects on the quality of sleep or its duration.

This long-term surveillance of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol users revealed no link between coffee drinking and sleep parameters.

The study findings were surprising to the scientific community because until now it was strongly believed that caffeine had the ability to block certain substances in the brain that are responsible for sleep. Views on the role of caffeine in sleep are somewhat contradictory and its impact varies from individual to individual.

For example, there are people who can drink coffee without being disturbed in the evening and sleep soundly. There are people who can not sleep properly just because they drank coffee in the afternoon.

Until now, researchers claimed that if you drink coffee up to 3 hours before going to bed, it will disturb your sleep.

How to control caffeine consumption
AgroWeb.org advises that if you are sensitive to caffeine consume it until before 14:00

The amount of coffee cups should be limited to 4 per day. Breakfast is a very important meal - it can either make or break your day, and you can replace it with tea.
