The Prime Minister of Swaziland is the first world leader to die from Covid-19, two weeks after being rushed to a hospital in South Africa.

Ambrose Dlamini, 52, tested positive for the disease in mid-November, but was told he was feeling well and was asymptomatic.

But his condition worsened and he was sent from the small landlocked nation to a hospital in neighboring South Africa.

The news was confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku, who also expressed regret for his death.

"I am commanded to inform the nation of the tragic and untimely death of His Excellency Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini. "He spent this afternoon under medical care in a hospital in South Africa, but failed to win the battle with life," said Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku.

Swaziland, also known as the Kingdom of Eswatini, has reported over 6,700 cases of Covid-19 and 127 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, for a total of 1.2 million people.
