Leonardo DiCaprio has again given a special status to the Vjosa River, just like last year, when he wrote that this river was in danger as it was part of a global project for the construction of eight hydropower plants. While today, he expressed happiness for the news that Vjosa can be saved from the development of hydropower plants.

"While we expect the federal prime minister and his government in Bosnia and Herzegovina to take legal steps to protect the country's Blue Heart rivers from further destruction by small hydropower plants, there is very promising news coming from Albania. Vjosa, one of the last wild rivers of Europe can be saved by the development of hydropower plants.

On September 25, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the Kalivaç dam project had been rejected and that the area would become a national park. The Vjosa River National Park would become Europe's largest river conservation site covering several hundred kilometers of rivers and streams and protecting hundreds or even thousands of species like Europe's globally endangered eel and the recently discovered Vjosa butterfly .

This would be a great achievement for Albania and the rest of Europe and the park could become a model for the Biodiversity Strategy within the framework of the Green Agreement. In anticipation of more good news regarding concrete actions for the permanent and complete protection of rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and the rest of the Blue Heart region of the Balkans.
