Amy Winehouse was just 27 when she was found dead in her London apartment.

She was one of the biggest music stars in the world, with a large collection of awards from "Brits" and "Grammies".

Her battle with drug and alcohol addiction and troubled relationships with ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil filled newspaper pages for years.

But a Channel 5 documentary examining the 13 reasons why one of the most wonderful talents of the 21st century has died explains that Amy's problems began long before everyone's attention turned to her.

1. The moment the family was destroyed

Amy was born in North London in September 1983 and was happy with her mom, Janis, dad, Mitch and brother, Alex.

However, everything broke down when the parents separated while she was only nine years old.

Divorce clearly had a profound and lasting impact on Amy.

"Strange cocaine and heroin will make you look skeletal," said Chip Somers, an addiction specialist.

6. Amy says no to rehabilitation

Her friends, family and administrators encouraged her to go to rehab.

Initially, she refused, a decision that inspired her for her biggest song, "Rehab."

At one point, she refused to seek help, but if she and Blake were treated at the same institution, then she would not object.

12. Amy loses her voice
