The much-debated king of Thailand has been isolated in a luxury hotel in the Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn said it had booked the entire Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl, after the four-star Hotel had received a "special permit" from the local council to accommodate it.

The 67-year-old king's courtyard includes a "harem" of 20 concubines and numerous servants, the German tabloid Bild reported. It is unclear if his four wives are living in the hotel with the rest of the group.

Hostels and hotels in the region were ordered to close because of the coronavirus crisis, but a spokesman for the local district council said the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl was an exception because "guests are a single, homogeneous group of people without fluctuations."

However, 119 yard members had been sent back to Thailand on suspicion that they contracted the highly contagious respiratory disease.
