Treatment of facial skin with the plasma, called "facial vampire treatment", consists in the use of blood as a serum to help stimulate cellular circulation in the facial area. And this is one of those treatments that has earned a lot of points and is increasingly popular in Albania and the world, especially since it was promoted by famous Kim Kardashian West.

But a new report warns that the procedure can be risky. According to a statement from the Department of Health of New Mexico published this week, this type of facial treatment may expose patients to HIV and hepatitis B and C.

What is the procedure?

"It's all about pulling the patient's blood with a syringe, processing it in a centrifuge to isolate platelet rich plasma, which contains factors that stimulate collagen on the skin," said Shari Marchbein, a dermatologist at the clinic certified by the board of professors at New York University.

The risk?

The dermatologist or plastic surgeon then uses the serum-converted blood and what is known as the source of eternal youth in the treatment of facial skin. "Multiple needles penetrate the skin at a certain depth, creating surface wounds through which the patient's plasma reproduces," explains Marchbein. The process is supposed to be safe. So how can HIV infection and exposure to dangerous hepatitis occur? In a statement from the Department of Health of New Mexico, officials warned that an inspection at VIP Spa in Albuquerque identified practices that "could potentially infect HIV-borne infections, hepatitis B and hepatitis C clients".

Two possible ways may be that the patient is infected, says Doris Day, a dermatologist certified by the board at New York City. "They may have drawn blood from more than one person at the same time and pass the samples, meaning that blood products derived from one person were also used in another", she says, while another possibility is that the micronisation device is not properly sterilized after use and the PRP material has contaminated the device and has been transferred to another customer. For that girl, look out!
